Springbank 15 Year Old

A brilliant sherried Springbank.

The Springbank 15 Year Old sits in the middle of their range and is 100% Sherry cask matured as opposed to the blend of Bourbon and Sherry in the other expressions. It was my favourite of the bunch in a recent visit to the distillery.

Colour

Coppery caramel.

Nose

Reminds me of Jaffa Cakes with orangey chocolate aromas. Good chunk of dried fruit and oak in there too.

Tasting

Thinner than expected but coats the mouth well. Dark chocolate raisins and leather with a hint of smoke. Very long, dry finish.

As expected, loses some of the mouth-feel when water added, but finish still dry. Sherry flavours appear along with a creamier chocolate.

Overall thoughts

This whisky is described as enjoyed ‘after dinner, or with your favourite cigar’ and I can’t disagree. It’s a cracking dram with a depth of flavour which I really enjoyed.

The dark chocolate and leather flavours remove a lot of the sherry sweetness but it feels well balanced with a great long dry, finish which is consistent with other Springbank expressions. If you like the Springbank 10 I’d definitely give this a go – it’s more expensive, but worth the upgrade in my opinion.
