Port Askaig 8 Year Old

The Whisky Exchange’s independently-bottled 8 year old Islay Single Malt reviewed

If you’ve never heard of the Port Askaig Distillery on Islay, that’s because it doesn’t exist!

Instead, Port Askaig Malt is a range of (unnamed) Islay single malt whiskies independently bottled by Speciality Brands , who also run The Whisky Exchange.

This 8 year old is the youngest age statement expression in the current range and is bottled at 45.8%

Our notes are below.

Nose

Liquorice, ready salted crisps and lemon peel.

Oily charcoal embers and a light grain note also emerges.

Palate

Much more peppery than you might expect with the front of the tongue immediately tingling.

Bold coal smoke, savoury, salted BBQ before a sugar sweetness appears.

Finish

The sweetness turns slightly fragrant with perfumed lemon before changing into soft ash which holds throughout the medium finish.

Overall

This Port Askaig 8 year old is a solid dram which would definitely suit fans of Islay whisky as well as those who may be scared off by the traditional island ‘peat monsters’.

There’s a nice balance of smoke and flavour and although it’s not a particularly complex whisky, definitely worth a try.
